Use Your Freedom Well
With Independence Day just around the corner, many of us are preparing for cookouts, fireworks, and a well-earned day off. These national holidays are more than a break from routine—they’re an opportunity to pause and reflect. What do we really mean when we talk about freedom?
It’s easy to think of freedom as the ability to do whatever we want, whenever we want. But if we stop there, we risk turning freedom into little more than self-indulgence. True freedom isn’t just about removing limits—it’s about choosing purpose. It’s about using our liberty not only to please ourselves, but to become the kind of people—and nation—we aspire to be.
It’s true that freedom isn’t free. Many have sacrificed deeply to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. So the question becomes: what are we doing with this gift?
Are we using our freedom only to accumulate more comfort and convenience? Or are we making room for something deeper—acts of compassion, service, justice, and connection? Freedom invites us to ask not just, “What do I want to do?” but “What kind of life do I want to live? What kind of world do I want to help create?”
Let’s not settle for a small vision of freedom. As we celebrate this Independence Day, let’s take a moment to reflect. Let’s use our freedom with intention, generosity, and courage. Let’s be people who are free for something—not just from something.
Happy to be in your corner,
Tom Page, LCPC
