Write a Note to Yourself

We’re in the full swing of the holiday season — Hanukkah is wrapping up, Christmas is right around the corner, and the New Year is just ten days away. Beyond that, the Midwest’s frozen wasteland of January and February waits for us… brrrr!

Things move fast this time of year. With so much going on, it’s easy for me to get caught up in everything I need to do and lose sight of what really matters. Part of that is just life, I get it — but I don’t love that tendency in myself.

So, I’m going to be honest with you. This might be a little self-serving, but I’m writing this email as a reminder to my future self — that on December 22nd, I need to slow down and remember what really matters. It’s not the stuff, it’s not about getting everything perfect. It’s about being present, grateful, and mindful of those around me.

Here’s my note to future me:
Hey Tom, take a breath. Appreciate what you have. Do something kind for someone else. Play with your kids. Be proactive around the house. Do something thoughtful for your wife. Check in on a friend. Turn off the technology. Put on some smooth jazz in the evening and sip peppermint tea. Savor life, my friend — otherwise, it’ll slip by without you even noticing.

Have you ever written your future self a note? It’s a simple but powerful practice. I’ve done it several times, and it’s always been worthwhile.

You could:

  • Write a note in your journal, then set a calendar reminder to revisit it later.

  • Write yourself an email and schedule it to send on a specific date.

However you do it, it’s worth a try. After all, there’s nobody who can get through to you quite like a wiser, more reflective version of you.

Happy to be in your corner,

Tom Page, LCPC
